Halepa is located NE. of Chania on the hills that dominate the isthmus that connects the Akrotiri peninsula with the plain of Chania. It began to be inhabited around the beginning of the 19th century by wealthy people of Chania who transformed it into a great aristocratic suburb with luxurious villas with lush gardens and tree-lined streets, giving the image of a European resort stretching to the coast, relatively steep and lush. stunning view of Chania and the homonymous bay. In Aleppo was the seat of the current Commander-in-Chief of Crete, the mansions of the consuls general of the Great Powers as well as the French School of Nuns of the Order of San Josef.
This suburb was later chosen by Commissioner Prince George, where his villa, which the locals call a palace, as well as Eleftherios Venizelos as his place of permanent residence, in a summer house built by his father Kyriakos Venizelos and which, (today is a museum – institute of studies), is very close to the previous one.
During his mission in Crete, Prince George, from the remuneration, he received from Russia as admiral of the imperial fleet, built in Halepa the sanctuary of St. Magdalene, Russian style, with the characteristic dome.
In the NW. At the end of the beach where the coast is smooth, there is now a small fishing shelter, while some tanneries that were developed in the past are now deserted. Nevertheless, even today it remains the most remarkable suburb of Chania with special tourist development.
