About Sternes
In the South East of Akrotiri and at a distance of 15 km from the city of Chania, at an altitude of 170m. on a plateau with an excellent view to the bay of Souda, for centuries has been built the village of Sternes.
In 1949, a rectangular tomb of the 4th century BC was found at Limni, near the Minoan settlement of ancient Minoa. Consequently in the most ancient Minoan settlement there was a later Greek.
Around the village there are catacombs of the first Christian years and the caves Spilia, Marathospilios and Katevati.
In 1913, the High Commissioner of Crete, Stefanos Dragoumis, on the occasion of the death of King George, decided to rename the islet of Souda from Agios Nikolaos to Agios Georgios. For this purpose, together with the then Bishop Agathangelos Ninolakis, his daughter Zoe made a beautiful icon – a flag of Agios Georgios. Preparations began and boats departed from the port of Souda and from the Minoa lagoon, which was the port of Sternes, with quite a lot of people.
And while the weather was good, on the way back, a storm suddenly caught up with them, causing some boats to capsize and six, according to others, nine people to drown. The event was considered a miracle or rather “anger” of Agios Nikolaos who did not want the renaming of the Church. The other passengers came out scared and scared ashore in the lagoon of Minoa where a eulogy was performed in the small church of Agios Georgios. Later, Zoe Dragoumi donated the icon-flag to the Parish of Sternes, which is still kept in the ecclesiastical Museum there. What makes an impression today in the above village is the large number of churches. The number twenty-four (24) is by far the most mediocre, because in one place currently held by the US Base there are others that are only accessible on the day of the holiday.
