Skines is a beautiful village in the municipality of Platanias, in the regional unit of Chania, Crete. According to the 2011 census it has 599 inhabitants.
It is 15 km from Chania and is built at an altitude of 110 m. In the valley of the river Keritis and is surrounded by an orange grove.
The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Schinea, in the province of Kydonia. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Kastrofylakas it is mentioned as Schinea with 36 due chores and 12 privileged, but it is not mentioned in the population census. Francesco Basilicata in 1630 mentions the village as Schinea. In the Egyptian census of 1834 it is mentioned as Scenes that he had 20 Christian and 4 Turkish families. The village is mentioned by Michael Chourmouzis in 1842, with the name Schinias.
In 1881 it belonged to the municipality of Alikianos and according to the census it had 286 Christian inhabitants and 1 Turk. In the 1900 census it had 362 inhabitants and belonged to the same municipality. In 1920, the seat of the homonymous rural municipality was designated. In 1925 it was established as the seat of a homonymous community which continued to exist until the Kapodistrian administrative division in 1997, when it became part of the municipality of Mousouroi.
The village was destroyed by the Germans in August 1941. The Germans blew up the village houses, exiled the women and children and executed 40 residents. In March 1943, another 40 residents were executed. Anthony Beevor in his book “Crete. The battle and the resistance” notes that on August 1, according to Special Operation No. 1, other villages were destroyed, including Alikianos, Fournes and Skines.
