History of Splantzia Square
Splantzia Square, today’s Square 1821, is located on the east side of the old town of Chania in Crete.
Splantzia was the center of the city during the Turkish occupation, as it was the oldest and largest Muslim district (150 Greek districts, 780 Turkish). At the northwest end of the square there is the church of Agios Rokkos, east of the square is the church of Agios Nikolaos, in the center of the square stands a huge plane tree and between the church and the plane tree there is an underground gallery / fountain, which is surrounded by railings .
In the center of the square stands a huge plane tree. Beneath the plane tree was an octagonal Arabian kiosk, in which the state-holders and prominent beys and agades had the right to sit and enjoy their coffee. In the square of the square during the Turkish occupation, Greek Christians, who were fighting for the struggle for Cretan freedom, were hanged, executed and tortured. Specifically, in the first days of the revolution in mainland Greece, the Turks, worried about the transfer of the revolution to the island, hanged the active bishop of Kissamos Melchisedek Despotakis (May 19, 1821), after previously dragging him from his beard to his naked beard. , now dead, was dragged by the rope of hanging by the Turkish mob in the narrow alleys of the city. The same happened to the deacon from Veria Kallinikos. In the square there is a plaque in their memory.
